Nokia was once a dominant player in the mobile phone industry, but lost ground to competitors like Apple and Samsung. In 2014, Microsoft purchased Nokia's mobile division and the Nokia brand was used on Microsoft's Lumia line of smartphones. In 2016, HMD Global, a Finnish company, acquired the rights to the Nokia brand and has since released several new Nokia-branded smartphones, running on Android operating system.
